Fall Migration:

Entiat Ridge is in the Cascade Mountains about 100 miles East of Seattle.

Every fall, thousands of hawks, eagles and falcons migrate south along the mountain ridges of Washington. They are following ancient routes along the Pacific Flyway in route to their wintering grounds in Oregon, California and Mexico.

Our primary goal at Entiat is to capture and band as many migrant raptors as possible. We want to learn about their numbers, species composition, movements, behavior, geographic origins and longevity.

We set up our Entiat Ridge Experimental Hawk Banding Station in 2000 and we have banded 200 to 350 birds each year. We have one blind, perched on top of the ridge at 5,000 feet with a view generally NNW. Here is a view of the site with Glacier Peak in the background.

We have completed a detailed report of the study for the past five years, our 2005 Final Report  (410kB pdf file).
